The women’s cycling challenge will take place on Dubai’s Al-Qudra track in October

DUBAI: The second edition of the Women’s Cycling Challenge will take place at Dubai’s Al-Qudra cycle path in the Al-Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve next October. 8, the Emirati news agency WAM reported.

The event is presented by the logistics company DP World and takes place under the auspices of the Dubai Sports Council and the Dubai Women’s Sports Committee, in association with the United Arab Emirates Cycling Federation.

The challenge, over distances of 40 and 70 kilometers, is open to cyclists of all levels who can participate individually or as a team.

A spokesperson for the DSC said: “The Women’s Cycling Challenge supports a healthy and active lifestyle for women by offering them the opportunity to practice sports and physical activity that allows them to compete in an environment that conforms to the customs and traditions of women. UAE: It is one of our strategic goals and the Women’s Cycling Challenge is an initiative that seeks to further those goals.

“We are delighted that DP World is a partner and supporter of this major sporting event for women in the UAE, supporting the opportunities and initiatives women have to participate in sport at all levels in the country.”

“At the organizational level, we have consistently supported women and are committed to increasing female representation in all areas, thus promoting the aspirations of women in the UAE,” added Qayed.

Cyclists will race through the Al-Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve, which is home to 204 native bird species, 158 migratory bird species, many endangered animals, as well as Arabian oryx, Arabian sand gazelles, foxes and wild cats .

Within the reserve is also the 3,000-year-old archaeological site of Saruq Al-Hadid, one of the oldest in the country dating back to the Iron Age.

Ruth Dickinson, director of the event, said: “Women cycling for leisure and as a way to keep fit are popular in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates. Across the region, it is a rapidly growing sport and pastime for women of all levels of fitness and driving ability.

“In Dubai we have excellent facilities and easy access to the city’s cycle paths and this has encouraged more women to engage in cycling in a competitive and social way.

“We are encouraging women at all skill levels to participate in the challenge. We would love to see women come and run to compete, or ride just for fun and enjoy a great experience, “she added.
